?I moved here from Maryland so I could raise goats,? says Jeanne Smith, a library assistant at the Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock. ?I have goats and chickens. I love the whole country living philosophy and just being healthy. The atmosphere at our library is very much connected to green living, crafts and food.?
Browsing the library?s book collection or chatting with staff quickly reveals a common interest in health and sustainable practices.
?It is a hotbed of health at this library,? quips Smith, who just happens to be spearheading its upcoming Healthy Living Fair on Saturday, April 14.
Smith and her event committee have gathered a diverse roster of professionals who will demonstrate and explain everything from backyard composting and juicing to better health and Zumba. The whole day will center on four key lifestyle components: fitness, healthy mind and spirit, healthy body, and green living.
The fair is one of many free programs scheduled at York County Libraries in celebration of National Library Week, April 8-14. The week?s focus is the five critical literacies that Pennsylvania?s libraries collectively believe are essential for moving PA Forward. They include health literacy, basic literacy, financial literacy, civic/social literacy, and information literacy ? all building blocks for both individual success and a strong, vibrant commonwealth.
Health literacy is certainly Glen Rock?s emphasis for the week. ?We are really excited about educating people and making them aware of resources available in their community,? says Library Director Gina Mumaw. ?You don?t have to live in a big city to access the depth of resources and knowledge we have here.?
Mumaw has noticed that sustainable gardening is becoming a trend, and that people are becoming increasingly concerned, as a whole, about our food supply and environment.
?We are paying more attention to what we?re eating and how we?re gardening. We?re really getting back to our roots,? she adds. The event is free, and although none of the demonstrators will be selling anything that day, they will provide literature and contact information for interested attendees who want to learn more.
Among the experts presenting are Marc and Jenny Shearer, the husband and wife team from Swissland Acres in Glen Rock. Their farm is dedicated to feeding and raising livestock naturally without the use of drugs and chemicals. Marc will be explaining the difference in quality of the eggs produced in this type of setting, and the benefits of selecting grass-fed meat to put on the family dinner table.
Jenny, who will be talking about syncing your mind, body and spirit at the Healthy Living Fair, says ?people tend to think only about one aspect of their health. They tend to think physical.?
According to Jenny, all three aspects are important components of health, and how you think is related. When you are stressed, your body uses vitamin D. There is a direct connection. ?If you change your mind, you can change your body.?
